52 standard cards + 2 jokers in a deck.
To me, these cards use to mean go-fish, speed, or poker.
Now it means 54 chances to push my limits.
My first experience with "deck of cards" just happened to be my 1st day of CrossFit. Then there were only 3 of us at the 5am class. Today we got the wonderful opportunity to try it again!
The only difference was there were 3 groups of 3 and instead of our trainer, 1 person at a time in each group drew a card. Seeing it done like this today made me think of how this WOD resembled our own lives. (Of course this was reflection afterwards, during I was thinking of ways to convince Rafe to never make us do this again)
But really no one person did the same as another because every group had a different deck of cards, everyone took turns and people finished before and after each other. But everyone finished.
We were given the power to flip the card, but no matter what group you were in each face value meant the same workout. A joker = 400m run. This never changed, but people kept flipping no matter how much none of us wanted to see that card.
God's plans for us can seem a lot like "Deck of Cards"
The cards are different for everyone. The face value is set for you, but you have the free will to flip your next card over. At some point everyone will finish their deck of cards and by that time will you have had a good workout? Will you be laying on the floor, sweating because you pushed yourself to your limit? I want that in life. I want that in my son's life.
But sometimes I'm afraid when I flip my next card over I won't realize how great it really is before I get ahead of myself, forget God's plan and just run to finish for a prize instead of THE prize.
"24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize."
- 1 Corinthians 9: 24-27
Run your race for Him who gave you life.
Flip your cards over according to His plan
and don't be eager to see what comes next,
because before you know it, your next card will be number 54.
